The average meal per person has 5.17 kg of CO2e per person. To meet the UN's sustainability targets for Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement, it’s estimated that a meal should not exceed 0.5 kg CO2e per meal. Our climate label is applied to meals that emit between 0.1 and 0.5 kg CO2e in alignment with what the WWF and the UN consider to be a climate-friendly meal per person.
We calculate the emissions of our recipes through a life-cycle assessment food database used in the agriculture and food sector. The greenhouse gas emissions from each ingredient have been converted to standard CO2 equivalents per kilogram of product. Carbon emissions are calculated using average CO2 emissions for the individual ingredients that make up a recipe. For example, one kilogram of beef has CO2 emissions ranging between 20–52 kilograms of carbon, thus we take an average of 36 kilograms. The carbon emissions for each individual ingredient are then carefully calculated based on the quantity per meal. Finally, we add up all the ingredients' emissions to get an overall idea of the emissions for each recipe. We give our customers this information and let them choose the meals that best fit their lifestyle.
